In early 1871, Ira Woodin and his young family loaded their possessions on a scow and rowed from the present Madison Park to the Sammamish River. They went up river to land where they took a claim of 80 acres. Woodin, far left, and his wife, Susan, are listed among King County's earliest pioneers. Susan Woodin started the area's post office, first school and first church in their home. The man in the center is Elmer Carlberg.

The Derby Schoolhouse was built in 1892. It stands in the spot where the Hollywood Schoolhouse is today.

Ira Woodin and Thomas Sanders opened a general store in the 1870s along the Sammamish River in the area now called Woodinville. The store, shown here around 1880, also served as a post office, hotel and restaurant. A sign to the right of the door shows that the Post-Intelligencer could be purchased there.
