South Lake Union
Things to do while you're here

If you're visiting, check out these spots:

  • The Center for Wooden Boats, a landmark on South Lake Union, combines lakeshore history with fun. Rent an old-fashioned wooden skiff and have a turn-of-the-century sailing experience. Stroll the docks and view the center's collection of canoes and kayaks. Take a class in rope work or woodworking. Or picnic in the center's shady pavilion. 1010 Valley St. 382-BOAT.

  • Get a bird's-eye view of the city with Seattle Seaplanes. The company offers seaplane rides from their base on the lake's southeastern shore. A 20-minute scenic tour flies over Lake Union, Puget Sound, the Ballard Locks, Lake Washington and Mercer Island. The company also gives scenic tours and charter flights to the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges, Mount Rainier, the San Juan Islands, Victoria and other Pacific Northwest locations. Flight instruction in single-engine and twin-engine planes is also available.

The scenic tour costs $42.50 a person. Charter flights vary; a trip to the San Juan Islands would cost about $360. Open from 8 a.m. until dark Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. until dark Sunday. 1325 Fairview Ave. E., 329-9638.

  • "Come sail away" at Moss Bay Rowing and Kayak Center. Located behind Yale Street Landing and run by a retired UW business professor, it offers lessons, rentals and kids programs. Prices range from $8 an hour for a single kayak to $110 for a set of four lessons. The center also provides "no-flip wings" for novice rowers. 1001 Fairview Ave. N., Suite 1900, 682-2031.

  • Watch the sparks fly at Cucina! Cucina! Italian Cafe. This popular restaurant and bar has become known for its sparkling lake front views, tasty Italian food, sprawling kitchen, wood-burning pizza ovens imported from Italy and "pick-up" scene. Try a $2.95 happy hour drink and the Focaccia Con Cambozola, a flatbread pizza baked with garlic, olive oil and parmesan cheese. 901 Fairview Ave. N., 447-2782.

  • Stroll along South Lake Union's boardwalk which runs, roughly, from the Center for Wooden Boats to Yale Street Landing. You can't miss the rows of gleaming yachts (most for sale) and pleasure boats. Watch a seaplane taxi off the lake's waves, or a sailboat drift languidly by. Try a grilled chicken sandwich or clam chowder at the Bluwater Bistro, a cozy restaurant with marina views.

  • Entros, the "intelligent amusement park" thrills visitors with its high-technology, interactive games. It features multimedia game shows, life-sized video games and "Big Toys." The World Grill serves dishes such as Hot Segovian Prawns and Louisiana Crab Boil. Game passes are $12 Tuesday through Thursday, $15 on Friday and Saturday and $10 on Sunday. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. Open at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 5 p.m. Sunday. It is at 823 Yale Ave. N., Suite A, 624-0057
