Snohomish
![]() A newcomer's observations
By MARK HIGGINS
Not every family who lives in Snohomish has been there generations. Madeline Renkins considers herself a bit of a newcomer though she moved to Snohomish 10 years ago from New York. "I ended up here in a fluke. I fell in love with the house. It was my dream house," she said. Renkins was a trial lawyer for a major Wall Street firm when she was sent to Seattle to help represent Marine Power in a lawsuit with Washington State Ferries. What she found changed her life. "In New York, working for a large firm you don't have a life," Renkins said. "Here, at that point in time, attorneys still could talk about the fact they went skiing on the weekends." Renkins stayed and bought an 1890-vintage home with four fireplaces. Her neighbors soon figured out she was a lawyer and came knocking. "I don't feel like I am practicing law around the kitchen table," said Renkins, "although that is kind of what I am doing."
