Smokey Point
Things to do while you're here

  • Fish, swim, or relax at Gissberg Twin Lakes County Park, 16324 Twin Lakes Ave., near the Smokey Point-Lakewood exit on Interstate 5. It's no coincidence that you can see the 50-acre park from the freeway -- the lakes were created by freeway builders who scooped gravel out of the convenient pits.

  • Visit the Marysville Livestock Auction -- despite the name, it's part of Smokey Point _ at 15714 Smokey Point Blvd. The main auctions begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays. You don't have to be a farmer to attend -- the bleachers are full of regular spectators who admire the animals and like watching the bidding heat up. If you bring children, though, be prepared to explain what happens to the slaughter animals after they are sold.

  • See an ancient roadside attraction, a 1,000-year-old-plus cedar stump, at the I-5 rest stop just north of Smokey Point. Farmer Leland Larson remembers youngsters driving a Model T Ford through the center of the tunnelled-out stump when it rested in its old location off Old Highway 99 years back. Or, for a more modern cedar attraction, walk through a model Lindal Cedar Home at the regional Lindal distribution center at 16132 Smokey Point Blvd.

  • Plan your summer garden at the Lakewood High School plant sale Wednesday, where agriculture students will sell the plants they've propagated and raised themselves. Call the school at 360-652-4505 for details.

  • Support senior center programs while shopping for 39-cent record albums, 69-cent jigsaw puzzles and other finds at the Stillaguamish Senior Center Thrift Shop, 18218 Smokey Point Blvd.
