Things to do

  • Parks abound: Sunsets are spectacular at the 29-acre City Beach Park bordering the waterfront, which offers RV camping sites, a beach, playground equipment, wading pools, a saltwater swimming hole and more. At nearby Flintstones Park on Bayshore Drive, kids can try out a cement car that looks custom-made for Fred and Barney. The ancient Garry Oak trees that gave the city its name provide shade and beauty at Smith Park at Southeast Ninth Avenue and Southeast Midway Boulevard.

  • Festivals aplenty: The town offers several annual festivals, including the Holland Happenings celebration of the city's Dutch culture in April and the Sea 'n Sky Festival in July. For information on upcoming festivals call the Chamber of Commerce at 360-675-3535

  • Food for fun: Grab a burger and some locally brewed (and named) ales at the Oak Harbor Pub and Brewery on state Route 20 near Northeast Seventh Avenue, a branch of a larger brewery on the island's south end. 360-675-7408.

  • Get in the act: The town has an active community theater in the Whidbey Playhouse, 730 Southeast Midway Boulevard. For information on current productions call 360-679-2237.

  • Deceptive scenes: Head roughly 10 miles north on Route 20 to Deception Pass State Park, with more than 4,000 acres of scenery and recreation. Deception Pass Bridge, a national historic monument linking the island to the mainland, is a piece of scenery on its own. For information, call 360-675-2417.
