Things to do while you're here

If you're visiting, check out these spots:

  • Washington Park Arboretum, 2300 Arboretum Drive E., is a 200-acre woodland and public garden that attracts more than 400,000 visitors a year. The arboretum contains more than 5,500 exotic and native plants, representing flora from 75 countries. Free trail maps are available at the Graham Visitors Center at the north end. Free tours are offered at 1 p.m. Sundays, starting at the center. The grounds are open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk. Pets are allowed on leash. 206-543-8800.

  • Pioneer Hall, 1642 43rd Ave. E., offers an intriguing, informal collection of photographs and paintings of early-day Seattle pioneers and their families. The Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington maintains a second-floor display of clothing, furniture and accessories dating to before the turn of the century. Open the second Sunday of each month, 1-4 p.m. 206-325-0888.

  • Fiske Genealogical Foundation Library relocated to Pioneer Hall in 1992 and offers a unique collection of genealogical data and research materials covering the United States, Canada and the British Isles. A $5 fee per day is charged or $40 a year to access the library. Classes and seminars are available. The library is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. 206-328-2716.

  • Madison Park Bakery, 4214 E. Madison St., is a cozy little spot in the heart of Madison Park that still believes in making its sweetened doughnuts, cakes and cookies from scratch. Owners Karen Ooka and Terry Hofman quit their jobs at Boeing four years ago to buy this longtime neighborhood bakery, which specializes in wedding cheese cakes. 206-322-3238.

  • The Madison Park Cafe is tucked inside a charming little bungalow at 1807 42nd Ave. E. Owners Peggy Stamm and Karen Binder have created a tastefully appointed daytime cafe that recently began serving dinners on Friday and Saturday from 5:30-10 p.m. Breakfast specialities include scones from scratch and sourdough waffles. 206-324-2626.
