This turn-of-the-century view of the Queen Anne counterbalance was shot looking north from Mercer Avenue. The half-square-mile lower Queen Anne neighborhood has always had room for print shops, taverns, insurance agencies, union locals and working-class folks.

Warren Avenue School, at Warren Avenue and Harrison Street, was built in 1902 as a 12-room structure costing $74,950. In the mid-1940s, the building began to house classes for elementary students and students with disabilities. In the late '50s, the school was sold and the site was part of the Century 21 Exposition Civic Center site, which became Seattle Center.
