Things to do while you're here

  • Indianola Country Store, 9175 Shore Drive: Dating from the 1930s, the building is a major community focal point. Its walls are festooned with antiques, local art and historic community photos. Its floors creak and locals filter in and out sharing news and goings-on in their lives. There's a pot-bellied stove in one corner and an old scale in another where you can weigh yourself. You can order a tasty sandwich, made to order, and chips for $3.75. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

  • Indianola Days, community celebration, July 30 to Aug. 1: Annual festivities will be held in several places, including the Indianola Beach Improvement Clubhouse, in front of the store, in the park, by the dock and the tennis courts. Events will include a tennis tournament, pet parade, sand castle competition, arts and crafts, a street fair and, on Sunday, a tide-flats race.

  • Summer Cottage Tour: A Sept. 12 walking survey of old summer and weekend cottages, some of them one-room log cabins, that were among the first homes in the community. Charge is $8, with proceeds to be donated to the Indianola Land Trust to complete purchase and preservation of 80 acres of undeveloped land. Organizer is Kathy Dickerson, who lives in one of the old weekend homes herself. Further information at 360-297-4588.
