Things to do while you're here

If you're visiting, check out these spots:

  • Floating Homes Association is hosting a houseboat tour April 27, which will feature floating homes along Fairview Avenue East. Tickets for the fund-raising event are $16; 325-1132.

  • George Pocock Memorial Rowing Center is a beautiful building used by hundreds of rowers of all ages. The center was built in memory of Pocock, an English immigrant who became a master builder of racing shells for the University of Washington. The center provides lessons in beginning, intermediate and advanced rowing. 3320 Fuhrman Ave. E.; 328-0778.

  • Pete's is a local treasure for those who enjoy wine and champagne. This popular neighborhood market, which also has fresh produce and meat departments, stocks between 1,200 and 1,500 wines. Knowledgeable clerks, reasonable prices and special sales. 58 E. Lynn St.

  • Terry Pettus Park, one of the pint-sized parks on Lake Union, is named for activist, unionist and free-thinker Terry Pettus, who led the fight to save Lake Union's floating homes. The floating dock is a popular place to put in canoes and kayaks. This peaceful oasis is at the corner of East Newton Street and Fairview Avenue East.

  • Louisa's Bakery-Cafe is a family affair with Michael and Louise Mooney and two of their children serving breakfast, lunch and fresh baked breads, muffins and croissants. Corner of East Louisa Street and Eastlake Avenue East. Park behind the building.
