Ballard
Things to do while you're here

Originally published Saturday, November 16, 1996

While in Ballard, check these out:

  • Crown Hill Cemetery

Visitors and even well-behaved dogs are welcome in this quiet place studded with giant maples. No famous people are buried here, but there are many early Ballard settlers. Some gravestones date back to 1903, the year the 10-acre cemetery opened. 8712 12th Ave. N.W.

  • Ballard Hardware & Supply Co.

Customer service is still practiced here. Founded in 1952 by Jim Freyberg and Lyle Hartje, customers make a request and wait while an employee finds it. Industrial supplies, including pipe, pipe fittings and valves and fasteners, hand tools and supplies. 5229 Ballard Ave. N.W.

  • Olsen's Scandinavian Food

The name says it all. More than 500 specialty Scandinavian food items, including homemade sausage and sandwich meats and imported canned and dry goods. In business for 30 years. If you can't find what you are looking for, ask store owner Eirik Olsen. 2248 N.W. Market St.

  • Nordic Heritage Museum

Permanent and traveling exhibits and art galleries give visitors unique perspective on immigrant experience. The 16-year-old museum offers Nordic language classes as well as crafts, performing arts and heritage programs. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday noon to 4 p.m. 3012 N.W. 67th St.

  • Sunset Hill Viewpoint Park

Even the chain-link fence that keeps people off the steep bluff cannot diminish the views of Puget Sound, Olympic Mountains and Shilshole Marina. When the crowds at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks get too much, head north on 34th Avenue. Spectacular at sunset. Northwest 75th Street and 34th Avenue Northwest.
