GOP politics leads to alimony squabble

Friday, February 25, 2000

HOUSTON CHRONICLE

HOUSTON -- A lawsuit by businesswoman-author Georgette Mosbacher suggests that her support for Republican presidential candidate John McCain was a factor in her former husband's cutting off her $32,064-a-month tax-free alimony.

Houston oilman Robert Mosbacher was secretary of Commerce under President Bush and is a family friend of his son, Gov. George W. Bush, who is locked in a tight primary race with McCain.

Robert Mosbacher denied any political motive and said he cut off the payments because his ex-wife had breached an agreement that they would not "disparage" one another.

"Oh, my God," he said when told of the lawsuit. "John McCain is an old friend of mine, and I like him."

Apparently, his former wife feels the same way about Bush. A Jan. 31 article by George Gurley in the New York Observer, where the alleged disparagement occurred, says Georgette Mosbacher "still considers herself a Bush family friend."

It quotes her as saying, "We get to pick between two good men."

The article headline says, "Georgette Mosbacher Rides with McCain" and "Gorgeous divorcee serves as his handmaiden to New York society money; After rough breakup with Bush buddy Robert Mosbacher, she sides with insurgent."

Georgette Mosbacher's high spirits and red hair made her a popular subject of gossip columnists during her 1988-92 stay in Washington.

She and Robert Mosbacher were married for 15 years.

Her book "It Takes Money, Honey" discusses her three marriages to wealthy men and advises women on how to provide for their financial future. She also operated a successful cosmetics business, and a Jan. 10, 1999, New York Post article estimated her fortune at $250 million.

Her suit is set for a hearing June 12 before U.S. District Judge Lynn Hughes.

Although divorce law in Texas does not authorize awards of alimony, it may be paid by agreement of the parties, said Georgette Mosbacher's lawyer, Tom Alexander.

The couple entered the agreement June 23, 1997, and were divorced April 15, 1998.
