Senate approves $5 million to repay Seattle for WTO

The Senate yesterday approved $5 million to reimburse Seattle for the cost of subduing protesters during last year's World Trade Organization meeting.
The money won't be coming immediately. The $5 million was part of a larger spending bill that President Clinton has promised to veto because of objections over immigration policy, hate crimes language and tobacco litigation. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., voted against the bill but said she's confident the objectionable parts will be removed and the bill passed.
