Putz gearing up for return after All-Star break

In case you were holding out hope that Seattle closer J.J. Putz would be back before the All-Star break, forget it.

Putz is going to start throwing on flat ground on the side Saturday in San Diego, but he's a long way from being ready.

He has to put his hyperextended right elbow through a rehab process, and then he's going to have to go out on an injury rehabilitiation assignment.

Putz knows all this, but he's smiling, because the injury could have been much worse. He's going to start throwing again, and will be in his natural element again.

''It's been brutal not being able to do anything,'' Putz said. ''It's going to be great to get out and throw again. I'm tired to not doing anything.''

''There's no way I'm going to be back before the break. The program they have for me will take at least that long. And I'm not going to rush it. I'm going to be sure I'm ready to go before I'm back. There's no reason not to.''

Putz has said that he might have tried to come back too quickly from his rib cage injury in April. He doesn't want that to be an issue this time around.

I have to say what the big rush? I mean really does anyone here expect mariners to contend for Playoff because I dont think so and really last JJ got hurt he was still favoring his elbow. So why not send him to Triple A to make sure he ready because their no big rush as really who gives crap if mariners make a win this season been over when Howard Lincoln and Chuck Armstrong decide to renew bill bavasi contract and themself being in charge which means Seattle Mariners goal isnt to win world series just ask Chuck Armstrong when he made the comment of our hope is to make playoff. Really does that sound like one of front office with high hopes when he said that. He a babboon who know crap about running baseball and seeing as Lincoln and Armstrong knows crap how to run a team than Mariners will be nothing more but playoff team.

why not trade him? closers are a dime a dozen but their value is highly over valued. Take any failed starter with a good fastball, boom closer. Let Putz get healthy , bang out a few saves and trade him,and start getting some talent back in the farm system.

If we trade Putz, not a terrible idea, the obvious candidate to close is Morrow and he has much more value as a starter. Unfortunately the morons that run the Mariners wouldn't realize this and probably make Morrow the closer. If we can come up with a viable option and get a lot in return, sure, trade Putz. On a losing team a closer is an unnecessary luxury.
